Planning the journey from Lao Cai to Sapa can feel a little confusing at first, especially if you’re arriving by train and just want to get to the mountains without any hassle.
I’ve done this route myself, and once you know what to expect, it’s actually a very easy connection.

Taking the public bus from Lao Cai to Sapa
If you’re not in a hurry, the public bus is an easy way to get from Lao Cai Railway Station to Sapa. Route 01 runs between Lao Cai Railway Station Square and Sapa, so you don’t need to travel across Lao Cai to find another bus station first.
The ride takes around 1 to 1.5 hours as the bus makes stops along the way. I’d choose this option if I were traveling light and didn’t mind spending a little longer on the road.
And the journey gets much prettier as you leave Lao Cai behind. The road starts climbing towards Sapa, with mountain views appearing as you get higher.
Taking a shared transfer from Lao Cai Railway Station to Sapa
A shared transfer is probably the easiest option for most people arriving by train. You travel with a small group rather than having the whole vehicle to yourself, and the ride to Sapa usually takes around 45 to 60 minutes.
I especially like this option for an early-morning arrival. You’ve already spent the night on the train, so being able to meet your driver, put your luggage in the vehicle, and carry on to Sapa sounds much nicer than working out another journey.
Shared transfers are also a good fit if you’re traveling alone or as a couple. You get an easier trip without needing to book a private car just for yourself.

Taking a private transfer
I’d look at a private transfer if you’re traveling with family, have several suitcases, or simply want the easiest possible arrival. Your group gets the vehicle to yourselves, and you can go from Lao Cai Railway Station towards your accommodation without waiting for other passengers.
It can make even more sense when there are a few of you sharing the ride. And after a long overnight journey, having everything arranged before you arrive is a lovely little luxury.

Can you take a taxi from Lao Cai to Sapa?
Yes, taxis are another easy option from Lao Cai Railway Station, and you’ll find services running between Lao Cai and Sapa. I’d mainly use one if I arrived without arranging anything beforehand and wanted to leave straight away.
Personally, if I already knew my train arrival time, I’d rather book a transfer before the journey. Then that final bit of the trip is already sorted.
Arriving in Lao Cai on the overnight train from Hanoi
This is where the Lao Cai to Sapa route catches some first-time visitors out. When you book the train from Hanoi to Sapa, the railway journey actually finishes in Lao Cai, not Sapa itself.

I’d probably book a shared transfer if I were taking the overnight train. There’s something very appealing about getting off the train in the morning and knowing the next part of the journey is already taken care of.
What is the road from Lao Cai to Sapa like?
Once you leave Lao Cai, the road starts climbing into the mountains and becomes much more winding. The scenery is beautiful as you get closer to Sapa, so grab a window seat if you can.
If mountain roads usually make you feel queasy, I’d try to sit nearer the front of the vehicle. The bends are much more noticeable as you climb higher.
So, which option would I choose for Lao Cai to Sapa?
For me, the shared transfer is the sweet spot. It’s quicker and easier than the public bus, but you don’t need to pay for a whole private vehicle.
I’d still take the public bus if I were traveling on a tight budget and had plenty of time. And with several people or lots of luggage, I’d skip straight to the private transfer.
That’s really all there is to it. Getting from Lao Cai train station to Sapa sounds like an extra complication when you first plan the trip, but once you know your options, it’s a very straightforward connection.
