Layering Essentials

Light Sweaters and Cardigans

When I visited Japan in autumn, I quickly learned that a cardigan is a lifesaver.

The mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, so it’s nice to have something cozy to layer over your outfit.

The Everlane Cashmere Crew? Pure perfection. It’s like wrapping yourself in a warm hug—light but oh-so-comfortable.

The Madewell Kent Cardigan is another great option—soft, versatile, and pairs well with almost anything.

Long-Sleeve Shirts

Long-sleeve shirts are the unsung heroes of your Japan fall wardrobe.

They’re great for those cooler days when a jacket feels like too much, but a short-sleeve shirt just won’t cut it.

My top pick? The Uniqlo Heattech Extra Warm Crew Neck. It’s like wearing a hug—cozy, insulating, and perfect as a standalone or under layers.

T-Shirts

Don’t let the fall season fool you—there are still plenty of warm days in Japan. That’s where a good T-shirt comes in.

My go-to is the Everlane Organic Cotton Box-Cut Tee. It’s comfy, packs down to nothing, and layers like a dream.

For those warmer moments, the Athleta Momentum Tank is a breathable winner that’s as good on its own as it is under a sweater.

Thermal Base Layers

Autumn in Japan can catch you off guard with a sudden chill, especially early in the morning or late at night. That’s when thermal base layers really shine.

The Uniqlo Heattech Thermal Top and Leggings are my secret weapons—they’re light, breathable, and pack an impressive warmth punch.

Outerwear for Fall

Lightweight Jacket or Blazer

For those in-between days when it’s not cold enough for a coat but too chilly for just a sweater, a lightweight jacket or blazer is essential.

I’ve been loyal to The North Face ThermoBall Eco Jacket—it’s warm, packs down easily, and goes with almost anything.

The M.M.LaFleur O’Hara Blazer is your ticket to a polished look if you’re after something a bit sharper.

Trench Coat

A trench coat in Japan’s fall? Absolutely. It’s your go-to for cool, rainy days and adds an instant touch of sophistication.

The Burberry Kensington Trench Coat is a timeless classic—stylish, functional, and well worth the investment.

But if you’re watching your budget, the London Fog Double-Breasted Trench Coat offers a similar style without the splurge.

Puffer Vest

On those crisp mornings when I want to stay warm but don’t need a full jacket, a puffer vest is perfect.

The Patagonia Nano Puff Vest has been my go-to—it’s lightweight, warm, and great for layering over sweaters.

Another solid pick for your Japan fall outfits is the L.L.Bean Ultralight 850 Down Vest, which is both toasty and packable.

Bottoms for Comfort and Style

Jeans

Jeans are a staple for any season and perfect for fall in Japan. They’re comfy, versatile, and work for almost any occasion.

Levi’s 721 High Rise Skinny Jeans are great for everything from casual strolls to more dressed-up dinners.

Prefer a looser fit? The Madewell Perfect Vintage Jean is the epitome of style and comfort.

Trousers or Chinos

When jeans aren’t quite dressy enough, trousers or chinos step up.

The Everlane Italian GoWeave Easy Pants are my go-to—they’re lightweight, chic, and ideal for a full day of exploring.

The J.Crew Cameron Slim Crop Pant is another versatile option that pairs beautifully with various tops.

Maxi Skirt

The maxi skirt offers a blend of comfort and style.

It’s modest enough for cultural sites like temples, where respectful attire is appreciated. Plus, it’s great for layering—pair it with tights on cooler days or with a simple tee for warmer afternoons.

The Loveappella Maxi Skirt is my top pick. It’s versatile and pairs well with both casual and dressier tops.

Midi Skirts

For a touch of elegance that’s both fun and practical, a midi skirt is the way to go.

When I’m in the mood for something flowy, my Anthropologie Somerset Maxi Skirt never disappoints—it’s comfortable, stylish, and perfect for a casual day out.

If you’re after something more form-fitting, the Reformation Cassi Knit Skirt is a flattering choice that looks great with just about anything.

Leggings or Tights

If skirts and dresses are part of your fall outfit rotation, leggings or tights are non-negotiable. They add warmth without compromising on style.

I’m a big fan of Spanx Faux Leather Leggings—they’re warm, durable, and give your outfit an edgy twist.

For something more classic, Wolford Merino Wool Tights are perfect—soft, warm, and ideal for layering on cooler days.

Athleticwear (if you plan to go hiking)

Athleticwear for Hiking

Fall in Japan is perfect for hiking, with cooler weather and stunning autumn foliage.

I’ve hiked in the Lululemon Align Pants—they’re lightweight, moisture-wicking, and move with you effortlessly.

Paired with a Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily Shirt, you’ll stay dry and comfortable, even on those more challenging trails.

Bike Shorts for Under Skirts

Bike shorts might not be the first thing you think of, but they’re a game-changer when wearing skirts.

They offer extra coverage and comfort, especially when you’re on the move.

I like to wear the Spanx Thinstincts Mid-Thigh Shorts under my skirts—they’re smooth, lightweight, and keep everything in place.

If you’re after something with a bit more stretch, the Nike Pro 365 Shorts are a great option.

Footwear for Every Occasion

Comfortable Walking Shoes

You’ll be doing a lot of walking in Japan, so comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.

I recommend Allbirds Tree Runners—they’re breathable, lightweight, and keep my feet happy even after hours of exploring.

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 40 is a fantastic choice if you need more support. I wore them on long days, and they never let me down.

Boots

As the days get cooler, boots become your best friend.

The Blundstone 550 Chelsea Boots are a solid option—they’re comfortable, durable, and versatile enough to go with just about anything.

If you want to add a bit of flair, the Sam Edelman Laguna Waterproof Boots are a stylish choice. Plus, they’re waterproof, so you’re ready for anything the weather throws at you.

Waterproof Shoes

Autumn weather in Japan can be unpredictable, and there’s nothing worse than soggy feet on a rainy day.

The Sperry Saltwater Duck Boots and Vessi Everyday Move Sneakers are great for Japan autumn outfits.

Wool Socks

Wool socks might seem like a small detail, but they’re essential for keeping your feet warm and comfortable throughout the day.

I always make sure to pack a few pairs when I’m heading to Japan in the fall.

The Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks have been my go-to—they’re durable, cozy, and keep your feet dry no matter how much walking you do.

Another favorite is the Smartwool Classic Hike Crew Socks, which are soft and provide great insulation.

Accessories

Scarves

Adding a scarf to your Japan fall outfit is a simple yet effective way to stay warm and stylish.

On particularly cold days, the Everlane Cashmere Scarf makes a world of difference. It’s incredibly soft and provides just the right amount of warmth for those crisp autumn mornings.

Hats

A hat isn’t just practical—it can be the finishing touch that brings your outfit together.

I brought along the Brixton Joanna Felt Hat—it added a touch of elegance to my outfits and kept me comfortable.

If you’re going for a more laid-back look, the Carhartt Acrylic Watch Hat is both durable and cozy, making it a great choice for everyday wear.

Gloves

Gloves are a must-have as the temperatures drop in late fall. They keep your hands warm and comfortable, especially during early morning or evening outings.

The Ugg Classic Leather Tech Gloves are a stylish and practical option. They’re warm and well-made, and you can still use your touchscreen devices without any hassle.

For a lighter alternative, the North Face Etip Gloves are perfect. They provide warmth without bulk, making them great for when you’re on the move.

Umbrella

When it comes to fall in Japan, an umbrella is a must-have.

You never know when a shower might pop up, so I always carry my Repel Windproof Travel Umbrella. It’s compact enough to fit in my bag, yet sturdy enough to withstand windy, rainy days.

Another option worth considering is the Totes Titan Automatic Open Close Umbrella.

Sunglasses

Even though it’s fall, the sun can still be quite bright in Japan.

The Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer Sunglasses are a classic choice—durable, stylish, and offering excellent UV protection.

If you’re looking for something more budget-friendly, the Le Specs Air Heart Sunglasses provide great coverage and style at a lower price point.

Travel-Sized Hand Warmers

As the temperatures start to drop, especially later in the fall or early winter, having travel-sized hand warmers on hand is a lifesaver.

I remember exploring the streets of Kyoto on a chilly morning and being so grateful for the HotHands Hand Warmers I had in my bag. They’re small, easy to use, and provide up to 10 hours of warmth—perfect for those cold mornings.

Local Shopping Tips

Where to shop for autumn outfits in Japan? Here are my tips:

For high-end fashion, Ginza is the place to be. It’s where you’ll find all the big-name brands mixed with Japan’s unique style.

If vintage clothing is more your thing, head over to Shimokitazawa. It’s a charming area full of quirky shops offering everything from retro Japanese styles to classic vintage pieces.

For practical and budget-friendly essentials, you can’t go wrong with Uniqlo. Their stores are everywhere in Japan, and they have everything you need for autumn—think cozy sweaters, thermal layers, and lightweight jackets perfect for those cool days.

And if you’re looking for the latest trends, Shibuya and Harajuku are where the action is, with trendy boutiques that keep you ahead of the curve.

A quick tip: Many stores offer tax-free shopping for tourists, so bring your passport. Since some smaller shops might not take credit cards, it’s a good idea to carry some cash.
