Hanoi to Dong Hoi Vietnam: Transport Guide
Dong Hoi feels like one of those places that really marks the shift into central Vietnam. You leave behind the buzz of Hanoi, and suddenly the trip starts opening up towards beaches, caves and all that dramatic Quang Binh scenery.
It’s not exactly a short hop, so the journey itself is worth planning properly.
There are a few ways to get from Hanoi to Dong Hoi, and each one gives you a very different kind of travel day. Here’s how I’d compare them before booking anything.

I’m quite fond of the overnight train for this route because you’re using hours you’d otherwise spend sleeping anyway.
But if your itinerary is tight, I completely understand choosing the flight and getting the journey over with.

Are you staying in Dong Hoi or going to Phong Nha?
This is the first thing I’d check.
Dong Hoi is where you’ll find the airport and railway station, but a lot of travelers are really coming down here for Phong Nha and the caves.
If that’s you, don’t automatically book a ticket to Dong Hoi.
Some sleeper buses from Hanoi continue straight to Phong Nha, which saves you from arriving in Dong Hoi and then sorting out another transfer.
On the other hand, Dong Hoi is worth a stop if you want a night by the coast, a slower start, or somewhere quieter before heading inland.

Hanoi to Dong Hoi by overnight train
I really like the idea of this train journey.
You get on in Hanoi in the evening, climb into bed, and wake up in a completely different part of Vietnam the next morning.
It saves you from losing a full day stuck in transit, and you also save a night at a hotel.
For this route, I’d pick one of the overnight departures rather than a daytime train unless you actually want to spend the day looking out the window.
Which sleeper should you choose?
I usually prefer a 4-berth sleeper when I want a proper night’s sleep.
You get a bit more space and fewer people in the cabin, which makes a difference when you’re trying to settle down for the night.
A 6-berth sleeper is cheaper and still perfectly fine if you don’t mind sharing with more people.
If you’re traveling during the day, though, I’d just book a soft seat. There’s no real reason to pay for a bed when you’re going to be awake anyway.
What is the overnight train actually like?
It’s comfortable enough, but I wouldn’t expect hotel-level sleep.
There’s movement, station noise and people getting on and off during the night. I normally bring earplugs, a light layer and some snacks so I’m not relying on whatever happens to be available on board.
And somehow, even if I don’t sleep brilliantly, I still prefer waking up somewhere new to spending half the next day getting there.

Flying from Hanoi to Dong Hoi
If you’re short on time, flying is the obvious choice.
The actual flight is quick, and it can make a lot of sense if you only have a couple of weeks in Vietnam and don’t want to spend a night on a train or bus.
But I always look at the full journey rather than just the flight time.
You still need to get from central Hanoi to Noi Bai Airport, arrive early, wait around, collect your luggage in Dong Hoi, and then get to your hotel or continue to Phong Nha.
So yes, it’s still much faster, but it isn’t quite the one-hour journey it looks like when you first compare tickets.

Hanoi to Dong Hoi by sleeper bus
Sleeper buses aren’t everyone’s favorite way to travel in Vietnam, but they can be really handy on this route.
They run overnight, you avoid paying for a hotel, and some go beyond Dong Hoi all the way to Phong Nha.
That last part would be the main reason I’d choose one.
If I were staying in Phong Nha, I’d much rather wake up close to my accommodation than arrive in Dong Hoi early in the morning and immediately have to arrange another journey.
Sleeper bus or cabin bus?
If there’s a cabin bus available, I’d choose that.
You normally get a little more privacy around your seat or bed, which feels much nicer on a long overnight trip.
Traditional sleeper buses are cheaper and still do the job, but they can feel cramped, especially if you’re tall.
And before booking, look carefully at where the bus finishes. “Dong Hoi” and “Phong Nha” are not interchangeable when you wake up half-asleep at six in the morning.

Overnight train or flight?
This is the decision I’d spend the most time on.
If I had a relaxed itinerary, I’d probably take the train. I like overnight trains, and turning a long journey into a night’s sleep feels like a good use of time.
If I were squeezing a lot into a shorter Vietnam trip, I’d fly.
The bus becomes more interesting if Phong Nha is your final stop because a direct service can save you another transfer.
So I wouldn’t say one is always better. It depends on whether you care most about time, comfort, budget, or where you want to wake up.
Getting from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha
If you do arrive in Dong Hoi first, getting to Phong Nha is straightforward.
You can continue by shared transfer, taxi, bus or private car, and the drive takes you inland towards the mountains.
I’d arrange this before arriving if my train or flight got in very early or late.
After an overnight journey, I really don’t want to stand outside a station with my bags trying to work out where I’m supposed to go next.

Visiting the caves from Dong Hoi
You don’t actually have to move to Phong Nha if you’d rather stay in Dong Hoi.
There are tours from the city to places such as Phong Nha Cave, Paradise Cave and the Dark Cave area, so you can explore during the day and return to Dong Hoi afterward.
If I only had a short time in the area, I’d probably book a tour rather than trying to connect everything by local transport.
The caves are spread out, and I’d rather spend the day exploring them than worrying about how I’m getting from one to the next.

Where to stay in Dong Hoi
If you decide to spend a night in Dong Hoi, I like to keep things simple and stay somewhere central.
Dolphin Home is a lovely affordable choice with a friendly, relaxed feel. It works well when you want somewhere easy before heading on to Phong Nha or continuing your trip.
For something more comfortable, Meliá Vinpearl Quang Binh is a better fit if you want a larger hotel with more facilities and a riverside location.
Heading back to Hanoi
You can make the return trip by train, flight or sleeper bus again, but I wouldn’t feel tied to whatever you chose on the way down.
Maybe you enjoyed the train and want another overnight journey. Or maybe one sleeper experience was enough and you’re ready to fly back.
And if you’re continuing south, there’s no reason to return to Hanoi at all.
Dong Hoi sits on the main north-south railway route, so it’s easy to carry on towards Hue, Da Nang and the rest of central Vietnam.
