Da Lat railway station history
Dalat Railway Station was built in 1932 and completed in 1938, in a plan to build Thap Cham – Da Lat railway line, connecting the highland city with the Hanoi – Saigon national railway in Phan Rang, Ninh Thuan.
This railway line is 84km long, with a total elevation of 1500m.
In 1972, this legendary railway was shut down due to the war. After that, people also removed the railway tracks to sell. Steam cars at that time were also sold to foreign countries.
Just like that, from a railway of nearly 100 km long, only a short part remains active, which is currently the section from Dalat Railway Station to Trai Mat Station.
Da Lat railway station architecture
Dalat Railway Station was designed by French architects Moncet and Revéron, featuring the three highest peaks of Lang Biang and the unique image of Central Highlands’ house roof.
In the middle roof is a clock, and below is the design of colorful glass windows and the soft curves of the porch.
Also, the main hall of Dalat Railway Station now displays many rare and antique products for visitors. Some cabins are used as coffee shops, so don’t forget to stop by and enjoy a nice cup of coffee.
Da Lat train experience
Visiting Dalat Railway Station, most people go sightseeing or explore architecture. However, very few notice that the remaining electric locomotives are still used daily to take visitors from the central station to the Trai Mat area.
To experience this exciting activity, you should get to the ticket area and buy train tickets.
However, it must be enough from 20 guests or more to run the train. Please remember to contact the station in advance to see if there are enough people on the date and time you want to go.
Da Lat train to Trai Mat station review
The distance from Da Lat Station to Trai Mat Station is 7 km, and it takes 25 minutes to travel.
Each car accommodates about 64 guests with a fairly new interior, beautiful windows, and comfortable seats.
The train moves quite slowly for everyone to enjoy sightseeing and taking pictures.
However, one minus point is that the old locomotive is a bit noisy compared to regular trains. Also, there is no food service or private toilet on board because of the short distance.
