Hanoi to Cat Ba Island Vietnam: Transport & Ticket Guide

The first time you look at getting from Hanoi to Cat Ba, it can feel like there are far too many moving parts for such a short trip.

You’ve got Hanoi on the mainland, Cat Ba sitting offshore, and somewhere in between there’s a bus, a boat, maybe a cable car and a few places with names you’ve probably never heard of before.

But once you know how the route works, it’s actually much easier than it looks.

Here’s how I’d plan the trip from Hanoi to Cat Ba, and what I’d pay attention to before booking.

Hanoi to Cat Ba at a glance

Cat Ba is off the coast near Hai Phong, so every journey from Hanoi includes some kind of island crossing.

Hanoi to Cat Ba by bus

If I just wanted to get to Cat Ba without turning the journey into a project, this is the option I’d book.

You get on in Hanoi, travel east towards the coast, cross onto Cat Ba and continue to Cat Ba Town. Depending on the operator, that crossing might be by speedboat, ferry or cable car.

The nice part is that you normally buy one ticket for the whole journey.

You’re not expected to arrive at the pier, find the right boat and then hunt for another bus on the other side. The operator moves everyone through the connection together.

That makes this route feel much easier on the day than it sounds when you first read about it.

Check the pickup point before you book

This is one detail I wouldn’t overlook.

Some buses pick up passengers around the Hanoi Old Quarter, while others depart from their own offices or meeting points elsewhere in the city.

If two tickets are only a few dollars apart, I’d pick the one that saves me a cross-city taxi ride.

And once you’ve booked, save the exact map pin on your phone. Hanoi is not where I’d want to discover that “central pickup” actually means twenty minutes away while my bus is waiting.

What happens when you reach the coast?

Everyone gets off and follows the operator to the crossing.

Some services use a short speedboat ride, while others now use the Cat Hai to Phu Long cable car. You may also see ferry combinations depending on the company.

The cable car sounds more fun, and you do get lovely views over the water when the weather is clear. But I wouldn’t choose a worse departure time just to ride it.

For me, the better Hanoi pickup and arrival time would win.

Hanoi to Cat Ba by train via Hai Phong

I like this option much more if Hai Phong is part of the trip rather than just somewhere you need to change.

The train from Hanoi to Hai Phong takes around 2.5 hours, and several services run each day. You arrive right in the city, so you can stop for lunch, wander around for a bit or stay overnight before continuing to Cat Ba.

That sounds much nicer to me than jumping straight from one transfer to another.

If Cat Ba is your only destination and you want to get there quickly, I’d skip the extra planning and take the direct bus instead.

But if you enjoy train travel and have a bit more time, this can be a really pleasant travel day.

Continuing from Hai Phong to Cat Ba

From Hai Phong, you still need to reach the island.

Depending on your travel date, you can continue by bus and ferry, speedboat or another combined transfer.

I’d arrange this before leaving Hanoi rather than getting off the train and starting from zero. It’s much nicer arriving in Hai Phong knowing exactly where you need to go next.

Going straight from Hanoi Airport to Cat Ba

If Cat Ba is your first stop after landing at Noi Bai Airport, check the direct options before automatically booking a hotel in Hanoi.

Going into the city first sends you in the wrong direction, then you have to come back east again the next morning.

If your flight arrives early enough, I’d much rather continue straight to Cat Ba and wake up on the island.

Just don’t make the connection too tight. Immigration can be slow, bags can take ages to appear, and flights do not care that you’ve booked a bus for forty minutes after landing.

If you arrive late in the day, spending the night in Hanoi is much more relaxed.

Hanoi to Cat Ba by private transfer

A private transfer is the expensive option, but I can see the appeal straight away if you’re traveling with children, carrying lots of luggage or splitting the fare between friends.

You can leave from your hotel, skip the meeting points and avoid picking up passengers around Hanoi before the real journey even starts.

If four of you are traveling together, I’d compare the total vehicle price with buying four separate bus tickets before ruling it out.

Sometimes paying more to remove several annoying parts of a travel day is money well spent.

Riding from Hanoi to Cat Ba by motorbike

If you already love riding around Vietnam, you can make the journey to Cat Ba on your own bike.

Just be careful with your navigation because motorbikes cannot use the Hanoi to Hai Phong Expressway. You’ll need to stick to regular roads and use a crossing that accepts motorbikes.

I wouldn’t choose this route simply because I wanted a bike once I reached Cat Ba.

In that case, taking the bus and renting one on the island is much easier. You’ll still have all the freedom to explore without spending hours riding through traffic before your trip has really started.

Only have one day?

If Lan Ha Bay is the reason you want to visit Cat Ba, I’d plan a one-day trip very differently.

Going independently from Hanoi, reaching Cat Ba and then trying to squeeze in a cruise can leave you spending half the day just getting there and back.

A guided Lan Ha Bay day trip makes much more sense when time is tight. Transport and the cruise are bundled together, so you can spend more of the day kayaking, swimming or simply being out on the water.

I’d compare the actual time in the bay rather than picking the tour with the longest list of stops.

Where to stay in Cat Ba

For a first visit, I’d stay in or close to Cat Ba Town. You’ll be near restaurants, tour offices and transport, which makes everything much easier when you only have a couple of days.

If you want something stylish and central, The Moon Boutique Hotel Cat Ba is a lovely pick. It’s small, modern and has more personality than a big waterfront hotel.

For a beachy resort stay, Flamingo Cat Ba Resort works well if you want pools, spa facilities and easy access to the sand. I’d choose it when the hotel itself is part of the trip, not just somewhere to sleep.

And for something more relaxed and affordable, I still like Catba Oasis Bungalows. It has a casual feel, a pool and a handy location near town, so it’s easy to explore without overplanning every little journey.

How long should you stay in Cat Ba?

I’d give Cat Ba two or three nights.

Two nights gives you one full day for Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba National Park or exploring the island without feeling rushed.

Three nights is even nicer if your itinerary allows it. You can have a boat day, an active day and still leave a little space for the beach, coffee or doing very little at all.

Getting from Cat Ba back to Hanoi

The return trip is much easier once you’ve already done the journey once.

You can book a direct Cat Ba to Hanoi service and let the operator handle the crossing and road transfer again.

I’d reserve it once my dates were fixed, especially if I were leaving on a Sunday or holiday when more people are heading back to Hanoi.

And I wouldn’t put a flight immediately after it.

A delayed crossing plus Hanoi traffic is exactly the sort of combination that turns a relaxed island trip into staring nervously at the clock for four hours.
