Ninh Binh to Phong Nha Vietnam: Transport & Ticket Guide
Ninh Binh to Phong Nha works really well if you’re slowly traveling south through Vietnam. I love how you go from the rice fields and limestone mountains around Tam Coc to the caves and countryside of Phong Nha.
The journey is easy enough to organize, and you’ve got a couple of good ways to get there.

Ninh Binh to Phong Nha by bus
The direct bus is the simplest way to get from Ninh Binh to Phong Nha. You get on around Ninh Binh or Tam Coc and stay on the same journey until Phong Nha.
There are daytime, sleeper and cabin buses, so I’d focus on the departure and arrival times rather than the operator name. For me, reaching Phong Nha at a useful hour matters more than saving an extra half hour on the road.
Leaving from Tam Coc
If you’re staying in Tam Coc, look for a direct pickup there first. I wouldn’t go into Ninh Binh City with my bags when I could get the bus closer to my hotel.
It makes departure day much nicer, especially after a few days cycling and exploring around Tam Coc.

Daytime or sleeper bus?
I like a daytime bus when I want to arrive, check in and still have an easy evening in Phong Nha. It also means you’re not waking up somewhere at an awkward hour trying to find your hotel.
A sleeper or cabin bus makes more sense when I want to keep the day free. Go for a cabin on a later departure because having a little more space makes a long bus ride much nicer.

Ninh Binh to Phong Nha by train
The train takes longer, but I still like this option if I’m not in a hurry.
Phong Nha doesn’t have a railway station, so you travel from Ninh Binh to Dong Hoi first, then finish the journey by road. If you’re taking an overnight train, book a sleeper cabin and use the journey as your night’s accommodation.
There’s more room to move around than on the bus, and I enjoy being able to stretch my legs properly during a longer trip.

Ninh Binh to Phong Nha by private transfer
A private transfer is the comfortable choice when you’re traveling with family or a few friends.
You can leave straight from your accommodation and go directly to Phong Nha, so it’s useful if you’re staying outside central Tam Coc or carrying more luggage.

Once you arrive in Phong Nha
I really like Phong Nha because there’s plenty to do without the area feeling too busy. The caves are the main reason most people come, but leave some time for the countryside too.
Paradise Cave is one of my favorite places to visit in Phong Nha. It’s easy to visit, and the huge chambers inside are beautiful.
For something more active, Dark Cave mixes ziplining, swimming and mud, while a slower afternoon works perfectly for cycling or riding around the surrounding countryside.

Where to stay in Phong Nha
I like staying somewhere with a bit of space and greenery in Phong Nha. After spending the day underground or out exploring, coming back somewhere quiet feels especially nice.
Nguyen Shack Retreat would be my pick for a slower stay away from the busiest part of town. I like the bungalow setting and would choose it when I wanted the accommodation to feel part of the trip.
Funny Monkeys Homestay is handier if you want to be closer to restaurants and tour pickups. Choose this one if convenience matters more than being out in the countryside.
