Ninh Binh To Cat Ba Island: Transport Guide
Ninh Binh to Cat Ba is such a nice route if you want to keep your northern Vietnam trip moving without going back through Hanoi. After a few days of rice fields, boat rides, and limestone mountains, I love swapping the countryside for beaches and Lan Ha Bay.
Getting there is pretty easy, and you can book the road journey and Cat Ba crossing together. Where you’re staying in Ninh Binh can make the trip even simpler.

Ninh Binh to Cat Ba by bus and ferry
Most travelers go by combined bus and ferry, and that’s what I’d choose too. You book the whole Ninh Binh to Cat Ba journey together, so you don’t need to organise the island crossing on your own.
The trip usually takes around four to five hours. You’ll find regular buses as well as smaller limousine or minivan services, and some can collect you from Tam Coc, Trang An, or Ninh Binh City.
I’d go with the one that makes the start and end of the journey easiest. A convenient pickup is much more useful to me than choosing a bus just because it has a fancier name.

Leaving from Tam Coc or Trang An
If I were staying in Tam Coc, I’d look for a pickup there rather than heading into Ninh Binh City first. It keeps travel day simple, especially when you’ve got bags with you.
Some services also collect around Trang An, which is really handy if you’ve chosen a quieter countryside stay. I’d always compare the pickup point with my hotel before booking.

How does the Cat Ba crossing work?
The road journey takes you towards Hai Phong before you cross onto Cat Ba Island.
Most combined tickets include the island crossing, so you don’t need to buy another ticket once you reach the coast. Depending on the service, you may stay with the same vehicle setup or switch around the ferry or speedboat connection.
I’d always book the full route together. It’s much nicer knowing that everything is already arranged instead of arriving at the pier with your luggage and working out what comes next.
Morning or afternoon bus?
I like the morning option if I’m ready to leave Ninh Binh. You can get to Cat Ba with plenty of the day left, check in, and have a relaxed first evening by the sea.
An afternoon departure works nicely if you want one last easy morning around Tam Coc or Trang An. I just wouldn’t try to squeeze in something big like Mua Cave and then rush back for the bus.
For me, a calmer travel day always wins.

A private transfer is worth looking at if you’re traveling with family or a few friends and want everything to feel easy.
You can leave from your accommodation and head straight towards Cat Ba without dealing with shared bus pickup points. It’s especially nice if you’re staying somewhere out in the countryside with larger bags.

Once you arrive in Cat Ba
I’d give Cat Ba at least two or three nights because there’s much more here than somewhere to sleep before a boat trip. I really like having enough time for one busy day and another slower one around the island.
Lan Ha Bay would be at the top of my list. Kayaking between the limestone islands is one of my favorite things to do here, and the whole area feels so peaceful once you’re out on the water.

Where to stay in Cat Ba
I like staying around Cat Ba Town because it keeps boat trips, restaurants, and getting around the island nice and easy.
I’ve stayed at Cat Ba Oasis Bungalows before and really liked the relaxed feel there. The pool is lovely after a day out exploring, and you’re still in a handy spot for Cat Ba Town.
LePont Cat Ba Bungalow is another one I’ve enjoyed, especially for the sea views. I’d choose it if you want somewhere that feels a little quieter while still being close enough to head into town easily.
For more of a resort stay, Flamingo Cat Ba Resort would be my pick. I’d go for this one when I wanted the beach and hotel to be a bigger part of the trip.
Where to go after Cat Ba

You can also keep moving through northern Vietnam rather than heading straight back to the city. I’d just give Cat Ba enough time first because after the journey from Ninh Binh, a couple of easy days by the sea feels very welcome.
