Hanoi to Nha Trang Vietnam: Transport Guide
Nha Trang is one of my favorite places for a proper beach break in Vietnam. You’ve got a long stretch of coast, islands just offshore, plenty of seafood, and enough to keep you busy when you want a day away from the sand.
It’s a long way from Hanoi, though, so getting there is something I’d plan around the rest of my Vietnam itinerary. There are a few ways to make the journey, and they suit very different trips.

Hanoi to Nha Trang overview
For this route, the difference in travel time is huge. I’d look at how many days you have in Vietnam before deciding whether a long overland journey makes sense.

If I only had a couple of weeks in Vietnam, I’d fly. I love train travel, but spending more than a full day onboard is a lot when that could be another day by the sea.

Flying from Hanoi to Nha Trang
For most trips, I’d start by looking at flights.
The direct flight from Hanoi to Nha Trang takes roughly two hours, so you can cover a huge distance without losing an entire day. You’ll actually land at Cam Ranh International Airport rather than in Nha Trang itself, but the transfer into the city is straightforward.
I’d choose this option if Nha Trang was one stop in a bigger Vietnam itinerary. It leaves you with much more time for the beach, islands and everything else you came here for.

Getting from Cam Ranh Airport to Nha Trang
Cam Ranh Airport sits south of Nha Trang, so there’s still one more journey after you collect your bags.
You can continue by taxi, airport bus, hotel pickup or private transfer. I’d arrange a transfer beforehand if I were staying at a resort outside the center or arriving with a lot of luggage.
If your hotel is around central Nha Trang, getting there is easy enough once you land.

Hanoi to Nha Trang by train
I love traveling by train in Vietnam, but Hanoi to Nha Trang is one route where I’d look carefully at the journey time before booking.
Even the quicker trains take around 25 hours, so you’re spending more than a full day onboard. That can be fun if you love long-distance train travel, but I wouldn’t choose it simply because I wanted an alternative to flying.
One nice advantage is the arrival. Nha Trang Railway Station is right in the city, so you don’t have a long airport transfer waiting at the end.
Which sleeper should you choose?
For a train journey this long, I’d go straight for a sleeper.
A 4-berth soft sleeper would be my pick because you get a proper bed and share the cabin with fewer people. When you’re spending a night and a large part of the next day on the train, that extra comfort matters.
A 6-berth sleeper works too if you’re happy sharing with more passengers. I wouldn’t personally choose a seat for the whole Hanoi to Nha Trang journey.
What is such a long train journey like?
You’ll have plenty of time to settle in, read, watch the scenery and catch up on sleep. I’d bring snacks, water, something warm for the air-conditioning and enough entertainment to get me through the quieter parts of the journey.
For me, this route makes most sense when the train itself is something you want to experience. If you’re mainly trying to reach Nha Trang, flying is much easier.

Hanoi to Nha Trang by sleeper bus
You can also travel directly from Hanoi to Nha Trang by sleeper bus, including newer cabin-style coaches.
The main thing to consider is the length of the journey. You’re looking at around a full day on the road, so this is quite different from taking an overnight bus between two closer Vietnamese cities.
I’d only choose the bus if the route or departure point worked particularly well for my plans. For such a long trip, I’d want the most comfortable cabin option I could find.
Cabin bus or regular sleeper?
A cabin bus gives you more privacy around your sleeping space, while regular sleeper buses have beds arranged in rows.
On a shorter journey, I wouldn’t care as much. Between Hanoi and Nha Trang, I’d definitely appreciate having my own little space.
If you’re tall, the actual bed size is worth paying attention to as well. A long journey feels much longer when you can’t get comfortable.

Flight, train or sleeper bus?
For me, this route is one of the easier decisions.
I’d fly unless I specifically wanted the long train journey. The time saving is huge, and you get an extra day to enjoy Nha Trang rather than spending it in transit.
The train would be my second choice because you have a proper berth and more room to move around. I’d put the sleeper bus third simply because spending that many hours on the road doesn’t appeal to me as much.
Your choice may be different if you love long bus journeys or want to experience Vietnam by rail. But I’d decide based on how you want to spend those 20-plus hours, not just which ticket looks cheapest.
Once you arrive in Nha Trang
I wouldn’t fill every day with activities here. Nha Trang works really well when you mix sightseeing with a bit of actual beach time.
Island trips are one of the big reasons to come, and Hon Tam Island is an easy addition when you want to get out on the water. You can also explore temples, try a mud bath, eat plenty of seafood or simply have a lazy afternoon by the sea.

Where to stay in Nha Trang
I love staying near the sea in Nha Trang, especially when I’m coming here for a few slower days. Being able to walk straight out for the beach in the morning makes the whole trip feel much more relaxed.
InterContinental Nha Trang is my pick for a polished beachfront stay right in the city. You’re across from the beach and close to restaurants, so it’s easy to combine lazy mornings by the sea with exploring Nha Trang.
For somewhere quieter, Mia Resort Nha Trang is one I’d choose when I want to properly switch off. The setting feels much more peaceful than central Nha Trang, with beautiful sea views and more of a resort escape.
And for a real splurge, Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is the special one. It feels wonderfully secluded, with private villas surrounded by mountains and water, so I’d save this for a trip where the resort itself is a big part of the experience.
Continuing your trip from Nha Trang
Nha Trang fits nicely into a longer route through central and southern Vietnam, so you don’t necessarily need to head back to Hanoi.
If you’re traveling north, Hoi An makes a natural next stop and gives you a completely different atmosphere after the beach. My Nha Trang to Hoi An transport guide covers the journey.
Heading south opens up even more options, so I’d plan the next leg around the wider route rather than automatically returning north.
Getting from Nha Trang back to Hanoi
If Hanoi is your next stop, you can make the journey back by flight, train or sleeper bus.
I wouldn’t feel tied to whatever you chose on the way down. You might take the train to Nha Trang because you wanted the experience, then fly back when you’re ready for a much quicker travel day.
