Ninh Binh to Hue Vietnam: Transport & Ticket Guide

Ninh Binh and Hue make such a lovely pair on a Vietnam trip. You’re leaving behind peaceful boat rides, rice fields, and those huge limestone mountains, then heading towards a city filled with imperial history, beautiful old buildings, and the Perfume River.

The Ninh Binh to Hue journey is a long one, but there’s a really nice way to fit it into your itinerary without losing a whole day. I’ll share the option I prefer, plus another easy choice that works especially well if you’re staying in Tam Coc.

I’d take the overnight train for this journey. It’s a long enough trip that having a proper berth makes a big difference, and I love going to sleep on the train and waking up in a new city.

Ninh Binh to Hue by overnight train

The overnight train is my favorite way to travel from Ninh Binh to Hue. You board at Ninh Binh Railway Station, settle into your cabin, and travel straight to Hue while you sleep.

For a journey this long, I’d definitely book a sleeper rather than a regular seat. I find it much nicer being able to stretch out, read for a while, and then actually get into bed instead of trying to sleep sitting up.

You can choose a regular Vietnam Railways sleeper or one of the private sleeper carriages attached to the same trains. The standard cabins are perfectly fine, but I’d look at a private cabin if I wanted to make the overnight journey feel a little more comfortable.

And this is one route where traveling overnight really helps your itinerary. You can enjoy your last day in Ninh Binh, get on the train later, and wake up ready to explore Hue rather than losing most of a daytime to the journey.

Ninh Binh to Hue by sleeper bus

The sleeper bus is another easy option, especially if you’re staying around Tam Coc. Many services leave from the Tam Coc area, so you can often skip the trip into Ninh Binh city just to catch your transport.

That makes a Tam Coc to Hue sleeper bus really handy if your hotel is already there. You can spend the day exploring, pick up your bags, and leave for Hue in the evening.

You’ll usually find traditional sleeper buses as well as newer cabin-style buses. If I were taking the bus overnight, I’d choose a cabin because I like having my own little space for a journey this long.

The bus can also be quicker than the train, but I’d still personally choose the train when I have the option. I sleep much better in a proper railway berth, and arriving at Hue Railway Station feels really easy once you wake up.

Train or sleeper bus from Ninh Binh to Hue?

If you’re deciding between the two, I’d keep it simple.

I’d take the train if I wanted the more comfortable overnight journey. But if I were staying in Tam Coc and found a sleeper bus leaving close to my hotel, I’d definitely consider that too because the pickup is so convenient.

Either way, traveling overnight works really nicely on this route. You get another full day in Ninh Binh and arrive in Hue ready for the next part of your trip.

Where to stay in Hue

Azerai La Residence Hue is a great choice if you want something special. It sits beside the Perfume River in a beautiful historic building, and I love the idea of coming back here after a day exploring the Imperial City.

Meliá Vinpearl Hue is my pick if you want something modern and central, with loads of restaurants and cafés nearby. And if I wanted a quieter stay with more of a resort feel, I’d go for Pilgrimage Village Boutique Resort & Spa.

What to do when you arrive in Hue

Hue has such a different feel from Ninh Binh, which is one reason I enjoy putting these two places together on a Vietnam trip. The landscape changes, the food changes, and suddenly you’re surrounded by old palaces, royal tombs, and the Perfume River.

I’d start with the best things to do in Hue and plan your days from there. The Hue Imperial City is one place I’d absolutely make time for, especially if this is your first visit.

You can also visit Thien Mu Pagoda along the Perfume River and spend some time exploring the royal tombs outside the city.
