Ha Giang to Cat Ba Vietnam: Transport Guide
Ha Giang to Cat Ba is quite a change of scenery, and I love how different the two places feel. You leave the mountain roads of Ha Giang behind and end up surrounded by beaches, limestone islands, and Lan Ha Bay.
It’s a long journey between them, though, and getting onto Cat Ba Island adds an extra step that’s worth knowing about before you book.
Here’s how I’d plan the trip.

I’d probably take a sleeper or cabin bus after finishing the Ha Giang Loop, but I’d look carefully at the arrival time in Cat Ba before choosing one.

Ha Giang to Cat Ba by bus
The easiest way to travel from Ha Giang to Cat Ba is to book a combined bus journey that takes care of the road trip and island crossing for you.
There are daytime services as well as sleeper and cabin buses. Some routes connect through Hanoi, while others head towards Hai Phong before continuing onto Cat Ba.
For me, the important part isn’t whether a bus is called VIP or limousine. I’d look at the departure time, the type of seat or bed, how the transfer works, and where I’ll actually arrive in Cat Ba.
Daytime or sleeper bus?
A daytime bus is a good choice if you prefer sitting upright and want to arrive in Cat Ba at a normal hour. You’ll spend most of the day traveling, but hotel check-in is much easier once you get there.
If I’d just finished several days on the Ha Giang Loop, I’d be tempted by a sleeper or cabin bus instead. Being able to stretch out sounds much nicer after spending so much time on a motorbike.
Cabin buses give you a little more privacy than the traditional sleeper setup, so that would be my first choice for a later departure. I’d still look at the vehicle photos because the beds and layouts can vary quite a bit.

How does the Cat Ba transfer work?
This is the part that can be a little confusing when you first look at the route.
A ticket may be sold as a direct Ha Giang to Cat Ba journey, but that doesn’t always mean you stay on the same vehicle from beginning to end. You might change buses along the way and then cross onto Cat Ba Island before another vehicle takes you towards Cat Ba Town.
Depending on the service, the crossing can involve the ferry, a speedboat, or the cable car. When everything is included on one booking, you normally don’t need to organise those individual parts yourself.
I’d much rather book it that way than arrive near Hai Phong and start working out the island connection with my luggage beside me.
Going from the Ha Giang Loop straight to Cat Ba
Cat Ba makes a lovely next stop after the Ha Giang Loop because the trip suddenly becomes much more relaxed. You don’t need to return to Hanoi first unless you actually want to spend time there.
Most Loop trips finish back in Ha Giang city, which makes it easy to collect your main luggage before heading towards Cat Ba.
I wouldn’t book the onward bus for the exact moment I expected to finish riding. I’d give myself enough time to return the motorbike, pick up my bags, shower, and eat something before settling in for another long journey.

What time should you arrive in Cat Ba?
I’d pay almost as much attention to the Cat Ba arrival time as the departure from Ha Giang.
An overnight journey can save you a lot of daytime travel, but arriving at 3 or 4 in the morning isn’t especially useful when your hotel room won’t be ready for hours.
I’d happily choose a slightly longer journey if it meant arriving around breakfast time instead. You can leave your luggage at the hotel, grab some coffee, and start enjoying Cat Ba rather than sitting around half-asleep.
Where will the bus drop you in Cat Ba?
The final stop depends on the service you book.
Some journeys finish around Cat Ba Town, while others may use an operator office or another designated stop. I’d compare the drop-off point with my hotel before picking between two similar tickets.
If you’re staying around Cat Ba Town, arriving in the center makes the rest of the day much easier. You can usually get to your hotel quickly and won’t need to arrange another big transfer.
Ha Giang to Cat Ba by private transfer
A private transfer is worth considering if you’re traveling with family or a few friends and want more control over the journey.
It can also be nice after the Ha Giang Loop when you have luggage and would rather avoid moving between different buses. The island crossing still needs to be part of the journey, so I’d choose a transfer that handles the full route rather than booking only as far as Hai Phong.
For solo travelers, I’d stick with the shared buses. But with several people sharing the ride, the extra convenience becomes much more appealing.
Once you arrive in Cat Ba
I’d give Cat Ba at least two or three nights rather than arriving just for a quick boat trip. There’s enough here to mix a busy day on the water with hiking, beaches, and a slower afternoon around town.
Lan Ha Bay would be at the top of my list. Kayaking between the limestone islands is one of my favorite things to do around Cat Ba, and a boat trip gives you a completely different view of the area.

Where to stay in Cat Ba
I like staying around Cat Ba Town because it keeps everything easy. You’re close to restaurants, boat trips, and transport, while the beaches are still nearby.
The Moon Boutique Hotel Cat Ba is my pick for a stylish stay in town. It feels a little more special than a basic island hotel while still putting you close to everything.
Flamingo Cat Ba Resort is the one I’d choose when I want a proper beachfront break after Ha Giang. It’s a much bigger resort stay, but having the sea right outside feels pretty lovely after several days in the mountains.
And Catba Oasis Bungalows is a relaxed option if you want somewhere more casual. I really like the easygoing atmosphere here, especially when the plan is a few simple days of beaches, boat trips, and good food.
Where to go after Cat Ba
Cat Ba fits nicely into a longer northern Vietnam itinerary, so you’ve got several good options once you’re ready to leave the island.

Ninh Binh also works really well after Cat Ba if you want to keep traveling south. Going from island scenery to the limestone landscapes around Tam Coc and Trang An makes for a lovely next stop without having to return to Hanoi first.
