Hanoi to Ninh Binh Vietnam: Transport & Ticket Guide
Ninh Binh is one of my favorite short trips from Hanoi. A couple of hours after leaving the traffic behind, you can be cycling past rice fields with limestone mountains rising around you.
Getting there is easy too, although there’s one little thing that catches people out.
When you book a ticket to “Ninh Binh,” you might end up in Ninh Binh city, Tam Coc, or somewhere closer to Trang An. They’re all in the same area, but they’re not the same place, especially when you’ve just arrived with luggage.
So before choosing the fastest train or cheapest limousine, have a quick look at where you’re actually staying. It can save you an extra transfer at the other end.
Hanoi to Ninh Binh overview
You’ve got several easy ways to travel from Hanoi to Ninh Binh, and I wouldn’t automatically pick the fastest one.
Where you want to arrive matters just as much.
Staying in Tam Coc? I’d start with the limousine options. If your hotel is in Ninh Binh city, the train suddenly becomes much more tempting.

Where in Ninh Binh are you actually going?
This sounds like a tiny detail until you arrive at Ninh Binh Railway Station and discover your Tam Coc homestay is still another ride away.
Ninh Binh city is the transport hub. Tam Coc is where many travelers stay for rice fields, cafés, restaurants, and easy access to the countryside, while Trang An is quieter and more spread out.
So I always look at the hotel address first.
If you’re staying around Tam Coc, a limousine that drops you nearby can make the whole journey beautifully simple. For somewhere around Trang An, door-to-door transport becomes much more useful.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh by limousine
For Tam Coc, the limousine is hard to beat.
These small minivans run throughout the day and are much more comfortable than the old-style local buses you might be picturing. Many also continue beyond Ninh Binh city towards Tam Coc and the main tourist areas.
That last bit is what I care about most.
After a couple of hours on the road, I’d much rather step out near my homestay than arrive in the city and immediately start negotiating another taxi.
Where do limousines leave from in Hanoi?
There’s no single Hanoi station for these services.
Some companies leave from their own offices, others use central meeting points, and a few arrange pickups from selected hotels.
Have a look at the map before booking rather than choosing by departure time alone.
Hanoi traffic can turn a seemingly convenient 8 am bus into a very early morning if the pickup point happens to be on the other side of the city.
And where do they drop you?
This varies even more.
One service might finish in Ninh Binh city, while another carries you straight towards Tam Coc.
If your hotel is surrounded by rice fields somewhere outside the center, zoom right in on the drop-off point. “Ninh Binh” can cover quite a lot of ground when you’re standing there with your suitcase.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh by train
There’s something I really like about leaving Hanoi by train.
You settle into your seat, the city slowly disappears outside the window, and before long the scenery starts looking much greener. For such a short journey, it feels like a nice little part of the trip rather than just transport.
The ride takes a little over two hours and brings you into Ninh Binh city.
I’d just book a comfortable seat for this one. You’re not on the train long enough to need anything elaborate.
What if you’re staying in Tam Coc?
This is the trade-off. The train itself is easy, but Ninh Binh Railway Station isn’t in Tam Coc. You’ll need another short ride once you arrive.
Would that stop me taking the train? Not necessarily.
If I fancied a relaxed morning on the rails, I’d happily do it. But if I’d just stepped off a long flight or had a big suitcase with me, I’d probably make life easier and take the limousine closer to my hotel.

Hanoi to Ninh Binh private transfer
That’s where a private transfer comes in.
You leave from your Hanoi hotel and go straight to wherever you’re staying in Ninh Binh, whether that’s Tam Coc, Trang An, or somewhere out in the countryside.
I like this option much more for families and groups than I do for solo travelers.
Once three or four people are sharing the car, the convenience starts making a lot more sense. And after a long travel day, arriving right outside your hotel is a pretty nice feeling.

Going straight from Hanoi Airport to Ninh Binh
Landing at Noi Bai and heading straight into Hanoi is almost automatic for most travelers.
But if Ninh Binh is your first proper stop, you don’t actually have to.
The airport sits north of Hanoi, while Ninh Binh is south of the city, so going downtown first adds another leg to the journey.
If my flight arrived at a reasonable hour, I’d be very tempted to keep going.
There’s something lovely about landing in busy Hanoi and ending the same day somewhere surrounded by mountains and rice fields.
A private transfer makes this the simplest, especially when you have luggage.
Prefer a night in the capital first? My guide to getting from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi covers the main options.
Hanoi to Ninh Binh by bike
Already comfortable riding in Vietnam? You can make the journey by motorbike too.
You’ll need to stay off the expressway and follow the regular roads south, so I’d use live navigation rather than trying to memorize a route beforehand.
Personally, I wouldn’t ride all the way from Hanoi just because I wanted a motorbike in Ninh Binh.
The countryside around Tam Coc and Trang An is the fun part. I’d save my energy for those quiet little roads and rent a bike once I arrived.
You can then spend your day riding between rice fields, temples and viewpoints instead of battling your way out of Hanoi first.
Day trip or stay overnight?
Short on time? Ninh Binh works very well as a day trip from Hanoi.
I’d just resist the temptation to cram in everything with a name.
Choose one boat trip, add somewhere like Mua Cave or Hoa Lu, and actually enjoy them. Racing between Trang An, Tam Coc, Bai Dinh and Mua Cave in one day sounds much less fun once you’re doing it.
A guided tour is especially handy here because the transport is already sorted and the stops are usually planned in a sensible order.

Have another night to spare? I’d stay.
Ninh Binh becomes much nicer once the day-trip groups head back to Hanoi. The roads quieten down, the light over the rice fields gets softer, and you can go for an evening bike ride without feeling like you need to squeeze in another attraction.
My favorite things to do in Ninh Binh will give you plenty of ideas for the extra time.
Tam Coc or Trang An?
If you’re wondering where to base yourself, I find Tam Coc easier for a first trip.
You can walk to cafés and restaurants, rent a bicycle easily, and you’re surrounded by countryside almost as soon as you leave the main street.
Trang An is quieter.
Staying there feels more like escaping into the countryside, which I love when I want a peaceful couple of days rather than somewhere I can wander out for dinner every night.
Either works well for sightseeing, so I’d choose based on the kind of stay you want rather than worrying about being beside every attraction.
My Tam Coc travel guide and guide to visiting Trang An can help you decide.
Where to stay in Ninh Binh
I’d skip Ninh Binh city and stay closer to the countryside unless being near the railway station is especially important to you.
Trang An Retreat is lovely when you want somewhere peaceful and green, while Trang An Mountain House puts you close to Trang An with those beautiful limestone surroundings right outside.
Over in Tam Coc, Tam Coc Rocky Bungalow is a relaxed option if you want the rice fields nearby but still like being close enough to restaurants and the main tourist area.

Heading back to Hanoi
By the time you leave, you’ll already know whether you prefer the train or limousine.
So I wouldn’t overcomplicate the return journey. Pick whichever departure works best from your accommodation and enjoy your last morning.
And you might not be going back to Hanoi at all.
Ninh Binh sits nicely on Vietnam’s north-south route, so it’s an easy place to continue towards destinations farther south instead of retracing your steps.
