1. Touyouken
Toriten, or chicken tempura, is a local dish in Oita, Japan. Thus, visiting Beppu without trying Toriten is a huge miss.
The most famous Toriten restaurant in Beppu is Touyouken, where this dish was first created. The restaurant was established in 1972, and the cook served the royal family. You can see many pictures and signatures of famous people who had meals here at the entrance.
Although it’s super famous, the price is affordable.

2. Naruto Udon
Looking for an excellent place to have Udon in Beppu? Head to Naruto Udon.
The food here is tasty, and the price is also really reasonable. A big bonus is that you can double or triple the size of your Udon without paying extra.
In addition to Udon, the restaurant also serves plenty of rice set menu and Soba. Also, don’t miss the Oden at the entrance. They’re delicious and enjoyable, especially in the wintertime.
Although the restaurant is usually packed, you get served quickly after ordering.
Bonus: You can get a coupon after paying at the cashier to exchange gifts later.

3. Osaka Osho
If you’re a fan of Gyoza, Osaka Osho is the restaurant that you should not miss.
The Gyoza here is delicious. The outer layer is thin and crispy, while the filling is well-marinated and juicy. With Gyoza, you can order the set meal with rice or ramen.

4. Yakiniku Korea Garden
This restaurant is a recommended place to have Yakiniku – grilled meat. Although it’s pretty expensive, the meat quality is worth the price.
I’d recommend ordering the All-you-can-eat menu and asking for a staff who can speak English. After choosing food on the tablet, the restaurant will bring it out, and you can start the meal!
Besides grilled meat, there’re other choices such as salad, fries, rice, soup, etc.
Note: You can only order within 2 hours if you choose the All-you-can-eat menu.

5. Omatsuri Ichibankan
Ichibankan is another all-you-can-eat Yakiniku restaurant in Beppu. Although meat quality is not as good as Korea’s Garden, the price per person is much lower here.
You can also have ice cream and drinks along with fruits and cakes while dining at Ichibankan.

- Lunchtime (11 am – 4 pm): ¥1000 (1 hour) or ¥1500 (1.5 hours)
- Dinner time (after 4 pm): ¥2500 (1.5 hours). There is seafood for the dinner course.

6. Joyful
Joyful is my favorite restaurant in Beppu.
It is a great place to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner since the restaurant opens 24 hours. The price is reasonable, ranging from ¥500 to ¥1000 per dish.
As the staff will most likely not speak English, you point at the dishes on the menu when ordering. The menu has both English and Japanese with pictures, so it’s easy to understand.
Also, don’t hesitate to order the Drink bar at Joyful. It’s definitely worth the money! You can get all-you-can-drink from soft drinks to coffee and tea. My favorite drinks are matcha milk tea and hot chocolate.

7. Ramen Shops
There are many places to eat Ramen in Beppu. Most restaurants offer great ramen dishes, and the broth is rich and flavorful.
Here are some of my favorite ramen shops:
a. Ramen Icchan
Located near Beppu Kamegawa Station, this ramen shop is owned and operated by a former sumo wrestler. Ramen Icchan offers a large-size portion of Ramen at a low price.
The staffs are amicable, and it’s enjoyable to watch ramen preparation from the counter.
Tip: You should order Gyoza to eat as well!
Note: You’ll need to know a few Japanese dishes to order here, as no one in this shop can speak English.

b. 豊後ラーメン一刀竜
This ramen shop offers a wide variety of Ramen. Notably, you can try Halal Ramen here!

c. 麺堂 香 別府店
This Tonkotsu ramen shop offers tasty soup, and you can choose the firmness of your noodles. The Gyoza is also good.

8. ピザアルト (Alto Pizza)
Located near Beppu station, Alto Pizza is the best place to have pizza in Beppu. The shop is small and cozy, and they offer delicious pizza at an affordable price (¥1,800 ~ ¥2,300).
This shop also has Halal options.
You can have pizza here with friends or order a takeaway.

9. Sushi Meijin
Sushi Meijin is a sushi-go-around shop located on the ground floor of Youme Town shopping center. The restaurant offers many sushi choices, together with Ramen, Udon, Soba, and other dishes.
Although each dish is cheap (¥100~¥200), the sushi tastes good.
You can order by touching the tablet panel, and the dish will come on the tray running toward your table.

Alternately, Kappa Sushi is also a good restaurant with cheap but delicious sushi.
10. Beppu Izakaya
After a whole day exploring Beppu, you should head to Izakaya (Japanese pub) around Beppu station and enjoy the night.
Most of the Izakaya sell food along with drinks.
