The first time I set foot on Railay Beach, I thought I was on an island. The isolation, the peace, the dramatic cliffs—it had to be an island.

But surprise! Thanks to its imposing limestone barricades, Railay, while being part of the mainland in Krabi, is only accessible by boat. A geographical quirk that works wonders for its charm.

Railay is divided into several parts, each with its unique charm.

• Railay West: Think of sunset views, beach dining, and that classic postcard image of Railay. I’d say this side is a more laid-back luxury.

• Phra Nang: A blend of the mystical and the scenic. Legends of spirits, captivating caves, and shimmering shores – a potpourri of tales and trails.
• Tonsai Beach: The backpacker’s paradise. Bohemian vibes, rustic cafes, and the hub of rock climbing.

How Much to Budget for Railay

Depending on your travel style, you can expect to spend 2,000 – 5,000 THB per day, not including the hotel.

Where to stay in Railay

On my first visit, I splurged a little and stayed at Rayavadee. This luxury jungle resort fills with amazing views, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, and good food. Plus, you can easily reach the beaches!

However, for those who prefer a balance of comfort and budget, Railay Bay Resort and Railay Phutawan Resort are excellent choices.

When to visit Railay?

As someone who’s been both during the peak and off-peak seasons, I recommend November to April for sun-seekers.

But if you enjoy some rainy charm and fewer crowds, the monsoons (May to October) have a mysterious allure.

From Krabi Town

• Where to Board: Chaofah Pier or Ao Nam Mao Pier.
• Price: 150 THB (from Krabi Town) or 100 THB ( from Ao Nam Mao).
• Time on Board: 30 minutes from Krabi or 15 minutes from Ao Nam Mao.
• Tip: Try to get the early boats; the sea’s calm, and you get a head start on your beach day!

From Ao Nang

• Hop On: Long-tail boat.
• Where to Board: Directly from the sands of Ao Nang Beach.
• Price: About 100-150 THB.
• Time on Board: A super quick 10-15 minutes.
• Note: This route’s a fave among fellow travelers – it’s fast and super convenient.

Via Phuket – The Scenic Route

• Hop On: A speedy speedboat or a chill ferry. Then, a long-tail boat to finish.
• Where to Board: Rassada Pier in Phuket. Once in Ao Nang or Krabi, switch to the long-tail boat.
• Price: Around 600-900 THB for the first leg. Then the usual long-tail prices.
• Time on Board: A relaxing 1.5-2 hours, then the short long-tail trip.
• Note: This route’s longer, but oh, the sea views! Totally Insta-worthy!

From Phi Phi Islands – For the Island Hoppers

• Hop On: A ferry, then a long-tail boat.
• Where to Board: Tonsai Pier at Phi Phi, then transfer at Ao Nang/Krabi.
• Price: Ferry costs you 400-600 THB, then the standard long-tail rate.

Three days are often prescribed, but Railay tends to weave a web around travelers’ hearts, prompting them to linger a little longer. I was meant to stay three days; I stayed seven.

Tonsai Beach: Just next door, but feels worlds apart. Tonsai is less developed, a bit wilder, and a favorite among the backpacker and climber community.

Ao Nang: Just around the corner from Railay, Ao Nang is a lively beach town brimming with energy! From its bustling streets lined with shops, restaurants, and bars, to its sun-kissed beach, it’s the perfect spot to mingle with other travelers or just chill with a cocktail in hand.

Hong Islands: A group of islands just a boat ride away. Perfect for day trips, they offer beautiful beaches, snorkeling spots, and some quiet away from the tourist buzz.

Emerald Pool: A stunning natural freshwater pool, it’s a delightful dip surrounded by lush forests. A bit of a journey from Railay but oh-so-worth it.

Tiger Cave Temple: A cultural and physical journey (there are quite a few steps!), but the panoramic views of Krabi are your reward. Also, it’s an active monastery, so you might see monks in their daily routines.
