Kuala Lumpur Food Tour: Simply Enak Review

If you’re visiting a new country for the first time, it can be tough to know where to start. That’s why we always suggest starting with a food tour!

Food tours are great for first-time travelers because they give you the opportunity to connect with the local culture easily. You get to taste local dishes and learn about the country’s culture and history through its food.

When we visited Kuala Lumpur, Simply Enak’s Kuala Lumpur Street Food Experience caught our attention.

This walking tour takes you through Chinatown’s “Heritage Zone,” where you can enjoy a variety of delicious street food.

Our experience

We met our tour guide, Pauline, at the local light rail station.

Pauline grew up in Kuala Lumpur and has been leading food tours for over five years. She was friendly and very knowledgeable about the area and its food.

Pauline led us through the streets of Kuala Lumpur, stopping at different food stalls to try local dishes and explain their origins and how they are made.

Our tour guide, Pauline, was an absolute gem! Her extensive knowledge of the local area and its cuisine was truly eye-opening.

As we walked through the bustling streets of the city, Pauline led us to local Indian cafes and street food vendors, and some hidden gems that tourists often miss.

Kaya jam is a beloved sweet spread made from a base of coconut milk, eggs, and sugar.

We tried more than 15 different dishes on this tour, and we loved all of them.We had eaten so much, we pretty much had to roll back to our hotel!

We started with a few Indian dishes, and they were so yummy!

Pauline’s insider knowledge was fascinating, and she shared it all with us, from the history of each place to the secrets of how their signature dishes were prepared. It was like having our own personal food encyclopedia!

Highlights

One highlight was visiting a Laksa vendor featured in Lonely Planet and CNN.

Laksa is a spicy noodle soup that combines rich coconut milk, tangy tamarind, and aromatic spices, creating a unique blend of flavors that left us wanting more.

We tried different Laksa dishes and pork noodles.

Another memorable moment was trying a coconut pancake and watching how it was made.

The vendor skillfully poured a thin layer of batter onto a hot griddle, then sprinkled it generously with freshly grated coconut and crushed peanuts before folding it over to create a crispy, golden-brown treat.

It was exciting watching the vendor’s skilled hands at work. It made me appreciate the care that goes into each treat.

The coconut and peanut pancakes at this vendor were amazing.

We also visited a traditional Chinese food store where Pauline explained different ingredients and how to use them.

I was particularly fascinated by the dried herbs and spices, and I decided to buy some star anise to try cooking with it at home.

Having grown up in the area, it was clear Pauline knew it like the back of her hand.

Her passion for the local food scene was contagious, and we left with happy stomachs and a new appreciation for Kuala Lumpur’s food.
